SIX top tips for finding a job this Summer
Description
Are you looking for a job in Banbury this summer?
Check out our SIX top tips for getting yourself that bit closer to finding employment!
Is your CV fit for purpose?
- Does it sell your skills & experience? Have you highlighted your achievements?
- Your CV needs to be constantly evolving to suit each situation. Adapt it for certain jobs, highlighting key skills & experience that are relevant to the job you’re applying for
- Key things to remember are to ensure it is up to date with your most recent jobs and that these have dates added too
- Detail is important, however, pages and pages of text does not encourage someone to read your CV. Using bullet points is a far better way of improving your CV’s readability

Self assessment
- With hundreds of jobs out there, having a good idea of the kind of job you’re looking for will make your search productive and worthwhile.
- If you’re not so sure what job you are looking for, be clear in your mind as to where your skills lie. In other words, what are your strengths & weaknesses
- This will hopefully help you in deciding what type of work best suits you and making your job search more productive. For example, if you enjoy talking to people, then a customer service or sales job may be best. On the other hand, you may be more methodical and enjoy processing paperwork and working with figures, so something administrative or in finance may be more suitable. Everybody’s different!
- If you are clear in your mind what you’re looking for, great! But be realistic in your ambitions. Do you yet have the skills and experience to get your ideal job? Or do you have to start from the bottom and work your way up?
Stay patient!
- Don’t expect your dream job to fall into your lap…you’ve got to expect to work for it!
- Looking for a new job can be a little sole-destroying, being declined or possibly not even hearing back at all.
- Do your skills match or closely match the job you are applying for? Don’t feel you need to tick every box on a job advert, however be realistic in what you are applying for to avoid disappointment and wasting your time
Try an agency
- Joining an agency gives you the opportunity to talk to someone face to face and sell yourself, difficult to do sometimes in what is now very much a digital and online industry
- Remember to do your research as to what the best agencies are in your area and also what agency best suits you. Some may specialise in temporary, some in permanent, while some may concentrate in certain sectors, for example exclusively Office-based or Industrial
Online Job Boards are a must!
- It is certainly a good idea to register your details and CV with two or three online job boards
- Your CV maybe noticed by recruitment agencies or employers, while you can also search for any relevant jobs in your area and apply for jobs with the click of a button
- If you haven’t heard anything back within a day or so, don’t be afraid to follow your application up with a phone call or e-mail. This shows a bit of initiative on your part and will give a good impression of you
First impressions
First impressions are so key when working with employers and recruitment agencies too. People generally form an opinion of someone within the first 8 seconds. But what you may not realise is that this can take several forms:
- Replying promptly to e-mails, calls & voicemails from your recruitment agency and any prospective employers
- Punctuality, ensuring you are on time for agency registrations and job interviews
- A well-presented appearance
- As a matter of course, many employers will check you out on social media before an interview. So make sure your profile doesn’t give them the wrong impression of you!
