Richard Branson is offering his staff unlimited holiday…but will it work?!
He is known for his highly successful and innovative approach to business, but last month Richard Branson took his innovation to a new level by offering his 170 Virgin Group staff unlimited holiday leave!
He says “it is left to the employee alone to decide if and when he or she feels like taking a few hours, a day, a week or a month off”. This is though on the understanding that the employee is “100% comfortable they and their team are up to date on every project and that their absence will not in any way damage the business – or, for that matter, their careers!”
He stresses that he would rather measure what an employee achieves, rather than how long they have worked. A valid point
This harebrained idea is actually not a new thing with digital streaming Netflix having implemented something similar several years ago. They have found it to be highly successful for their 2,000 or so salaried staff, again weighting the importance of results above all else. And the results speak for themselves with Netflix now having 50 million subscribers globally and the company appearing to go from strength to strength
While it certainly won’t work for all companies, it certainly does seem a feasible idea and one we may see more of in the coming years!
